I have a confession……..I am addicted to lip balm! I have one for my car, purse, work, scattered around the house even! Unfortunately, I’ve even washed a few of them while doing the laundry……..which has ruined more than a few items of clothing. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the money that I spend on each tube along with not really knowing what the ingredients are and I decided to take a shot at making my own.
After a lot of research, it wasn’t as hard as I initially thought and I can pick my own “flavors”. First, I needed to buy the supplies (which can add up) but I considered the long term cost vs benefit. I didn’t want my “tools” to overlap into my eating kitchenware so I bought a small double boiler, spatula, and measuring spoon/cup set specifically for this endeavor. I also chose to use these lip balm containers as they are easiest for me but you should decide what works best for you.
Knowing what’s in my lip balm is definitely a bonus for making it myself (besides not running out when I least expect it).
Mango Butter is rich in fatty acids, vitamins A and C while helping to reduce fine lines, protects from UV rays, and helps with eczema and psoriasis symptoms. It is also used to cleanse the skin. Mango Butter is derived from mango seeds and doesn’t leave a greasy residue.
Coconut Oil is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory and absorbs into the skin incredibly well.
Jojoba Oil is silky and absorbs well into the skin while locking in moisture.
Beeswax is both protecting and moisturizing while holding the lip balm together.
You can add essential oils to your homemade lip balm, creating your own “flavors”. As long as you are using high grade essential oils, the preference list is yours to build. So far my personal favorite is orange but the lemon is good too. Essential oils that are most often used include orange, lavender, spearmint, peppermint, lemon, lime, clove, and tea tree. Very small amounts of clove or tea tree should be used as they are both strong and clove has a warming effect.

Tools and Supplies:
Double Boiler or medium-sized saucepan with glass bowl
Spatula
Measuring Spoons
DIY Lip Balm Ingredients:
2 Teaspoons Coconut Oil
2 Teaspoons of Mango Butter (may use shea butter)
2 Teaspoons of Beeswax
1 Teaspoon of Jojoba Oil
10 to 20 drops of Essential Oils (optional)
Place double boiler onto the stove bringing the water to a boil.
Add all ingredients except for essential oils to double boiler and mix occasionally. The beeswax tends to take the longest to melt, anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. The mixture will be amber in color when completely melted. I occasionally add a little extra beeswax during the melting process if I want my lip balm to “hold” together a little more but it’s a personal preference.

Remove from heat and add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. I’ve used lemon, orange, and lavender.
If using glass lip balm containers, you can carefully pour the hot liquid into the containers.
If using plastic containers, allow to cool for 2 to 3 minutes before pouring it into the containers.
Once filled, allow your lip balm to solidify for at least an hour in the refrigerator or 8 to 12 hours. I allow mine to set overnight at room temperature.
