House Hunting in Texas: Finding Our Homestead

Our recent move back to our home state of Texas hasn’t come without its own adventures. One, we had to move me from Florida to Texas but first we had to survive Hurricane Ian. Before moving, I was residing in Fort Myers and unfortunately, took a direct hit from Hurricane Ian the week we were packing the house to move. It wasn’t my first hurricane but definitely the worst since when it hit, it was between a Category 4 and 5. The U-haul was packed in the driveway while the hurricane was overhead.

Then was the joy of driving from Florida to Texas. Just an FYI….Louisiana really needs to fix their roads. We did make a few pit stops and were able to see friends along the way. It’s been several years since I’ve been able to see these beautiful ladies in person. Thank goodness for technology!

Next, I started my new job and in between, we have been house hunting. We are searching for a home with more land than house and it’s been “interesting”. We aren’t looking for a large house but plenty of land for gardening, horses, chickens, goats, and perhaps a couple of cattle. We’re definitely downsizing from the previous house size but upgrading with land. This past Saturday, we spent most of the day on the road looking at 4 houses but spread approximately 2 to 2.5 hours from our current location and each other. The benefit is we spent quite a bit of time in the truck together and were able to discuss the pros and cons of each house and taking 2 houses off of our list. We have more houses on the list to see so we’re kind of in a limbo stage of searching but slowly making progress towards our future homestead.

One of the most important rooms in the house for me is the kitchen since that’s where most of the time is spent. I love to bake more than cook but it’s how I enjoy spending my time while sharing goodies and new recipes with family and friends. What are your requirements when house hunting? Are you looking to homestead? Enjoy the journey with us!
